AUCTION MOVES OUT: Bawtry Motor Auction Remarketing (BMAR), which has been based in the town for decades, has moved to Rotherham. The company, one of the oldest of its type in the country, is now known as Motor Auction Group (MAG) and is established in larger purpose-built premises on Greasborough Road. The Tomlinson family-run business has been a major feature of Bawtry during the time that it traded from its Corner Garage location. The company with its workforce of over 50 people has been responsible for bringing hundreds of potential car, motorbike and other vehicle buyers into the town on three days every week. The final auction night was held in Bawtry on March 30 and the first auction took place in Rotherham on April 4. MAG managing director James Tomlinson said: “The move from Bawtry to our new premises in Rotherham gives us a unique opportunity to build on our success, expand our operation and bring a high quality auction experience to South Yorkshire and beyond.”

 

NEW TOWN CLERK: Angela Harrison is the new clerk to Bawtry Town Council. Firbeck resident and former solicitor Angela has taken over the role from Jennifer Worthington who was clerk for 37 years and who is now a Bawtry town councillor. Angela’s first meeting as clerk is at the Bawtry Town Council meeting in the New Hall, Station Road on April 12 7pm. Members of the public are invited to attend to take part in the 15 minute open question and answer session that gets the meeting underway.

BRINGING THE HOUSE DOWN: Work to demolish the Station Hotel and associated outbuildings at 93 Station Road has been completed. The pub dated back to around 1860 and during its long history its past owners have included Lord Houghton and the Worksop and Retford Brewery. The premises were rebuilt on 1905. A planning application submitted to DMBC in 2015 sought planning permission to build 12 apartments on the land.

 

TIME FOR TOUR: The times that the riders competing in the Tour de Yorkshire will be passing through Bawtry and Austerfield on April 30 has been confirmed by the cycle race organisers. April 30 will see stage two of the men’s race set out from Otley in West Yorkshire following a 135.5km route that will bring the riders from Harworth into Bawtry via South Parade and Market Place at 5.03pm and Austerfield at 5.05pm before finishing in Doncaster. The separate one stage ladies race, with Otley’s world road race champion Elizabeth Armistead expected to be among the pelaton, follows the same route. They are scheduled to pass through Bawtry at 11.35am and Austerfield at 11.37am. Members of Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) will be celebrating the big event from April 22 to May 2 with businesses flying yellow flags, decorating their windows with themed displays and trimming the exteriors of their premises with yellow flowers, bunting and yellow painted bicycles. Yellow hand flags and whistles will also be handed out to children and to anyone who wears yellow on the day. BRA has commissioned a specially designed yellow tee-shirt that is now on sale.

                           

HELPING ANIMALS: The race night at The Ship Inn at Newington raised £854 for the animals at Bawtry’s Mayflower Animal Sanctuary on Narrow Lane.

 

CADETS TO CELEBRATE: Bawtry’s 2008 Air Cadets Squadron is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The squadron, based at its Green Park HQ, is on the lookout for former 2008 Squadron cadets and officers who would like to be part of the official celebration in September.

FASHION NIGHT: Edinburgh Woollen Mill hosts the fashion show at Bawtry Methodist Church on April 12 7pm. There will also be scarves and cards available on the night at the Doncaster Road chapel, admittance £4. Funds raised will benefit Bawtry Methodist Church.

 

CLOTHES SHOW: The Cherish Dress Agency holds another of its fashion shows on April 16 7-9.30pm in the New Hall, Station Road, which will include a wine and cheese supper. Tickets £7 from the Cherish shop on Station Road that is run by St Nicholas Parish Church and from which all profits got to the church or to a local charity.
