Wander-ful way to tour town and raise money for charity

BUSINESSES have teamed up with a real-world treasure hunt-style game to help people explore the town centre while raising money for charity.

The Rotherham WanderChallenge, in aid of Rotherham Hospice, will see puzzle solvers roaming the town centre using their smartphones to solve cryptic clues.

The winners could bag themselves goodies from nearby outlets such as a haircut or a free breakfast.

WanderList is one of the online platforms designed by creative hub Kaumaka Ltd, a Swinton-based company using technology to create fun and educational applications.

The online and real-world walking challenge launched in Rotherham last year as Wanderlist and aimed at getting people outside solving puzzles and actively exploring to discover answers located within the town centre.

Co-creator Robbie Mappin, who was born and bred in Rotherham, said: “WanderList is a people game, designed to gently work our brain muscles and our physical muscles in a fun way — it’s more about the journey than the head-scratching.”

A smartphone with an internet connection tracks the player’s location to identify where they are and help them find and solve the puzzles in the area.

A special Wanderlist challenge in aid of Rotherham Hospice will be held on Saturday, April 22, with prizes from town centre businesses up for grabs.

Robbie said: “In order to take part in the Rotherham WanderChallenge, people need to donate whatever they can afford to Rotherham Hospice, let us know they have donated by sending a screenshot of the receipt to us via our social media platforms or email, and then enter the code we send them.

“Then they just need to be there on the day and take on the challenge.

“We’ve been given some great prizes, too, generously donated by local businesses in the town centre, for the first five players who complete the challenge.
