Tribute to popular vicar

PARISHIONERS will pay tribute next weekend to more than 30 years of service by the vicar they knew as Rev J.L.

A special concert in All Saints’ Church, Laughton-en-le-Morthen, next Saturday (2) will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the appointment of Rev Jenkin Lloyd Jones as vicar of the parish.

One of the longest serving vicars of the parish in modern times, retiring 31 years later in 1984, the late vicar is still very fondly remembered today 28 years after his death in 1985.

The concert, which also marks the All Saints’ Church Patronal Festival, will be given by the Choir of St Mary’s Church, Nottingham, in which Rev Jones grandson, Ioan Reed-Aspley, sings.

The concert will also be attended by Rev Jones daughter, Gwyneth Reed-Aspley, a former singer herself.

The programme will include works by Cristóbal de Morales and Orlando Gibbons, Bruckner, Handel, Charles Wood, Faure, Stanford and Finzi.

Mr Reed-Aspley said: “To have the opportunity to perform a concert in the church where I had my first experience of wearing choir robes at the age of three, will be a huge honour.

“I’m very grateful to the church and the enthusiasm of its parishioners to enable this concert to happen.”

Money raised at the concert, which starts at 7.30pm, will contribute towards the ongoing restoration and upkeep of All Saints' Church.

Tickets will be available on the door priced at £10 (adult) and £3 (under 16s), with refreshments available.
