Time travel for Thurcroft pupils

ANYONE walking around Thurcroft recently could be forgiven for thinking they had time travelled back to the 1940s.

Because for a full week, the pupils at The Willows School, Thurcroft have been learning about Second World War.

They successfully recreated the sounds, sights, and tastes of the war years with mock air raids, fancy dress and war-time cooking to name just a few of the activities.

Younger children learned about life as evacuees and made gas masks and suitcases complete with labels, while older pupils made full size Anderson Shelters, which were used during the mock air raids.

They also enjoyed the chance to recreate some wartime cooking where spam and bread crumbs featured on the menu, whilst other recipes used carrots to sweeten cakes in the absence of sugar.

The highlight of the week was on Friday afternoon when parents, grandparents and family as well as members of the community were invited in for VE Day celebrations and the whole school was immersed in the re-created euphoric atmosphere of the memorable national celebration, with brand band music, a singalong and dancing.

Liz Johnson, who led the team which organised the week of activities, said: “I The event has been a tremendous success.

“All our pupils have learnt so much by participating in the range of activities we put on for them.”
