Each team, made up of nine to 16-year-olds, must design and programme a Lego Mindstorms robot and then use it to solve problems and tasks.

Teams will be judged on their ability to build and programme the robot, their presentation and research skills and how well they cooperate with each other and their competitors.

Today’s event is the first of 18 regional tournaments taking place across the country.

The winners of the Sheffield regional tournament will go to the FLL National Final, due to take place in Loughborough on January 26.

The Champion Award winner of the National Final will then go on to St Louis, USA, to represent the UK and Ireland in the First Lego League World Festival in April 2013.
