Rotherham doctor provides charity tonic for Radio 1 DJ

AN EMERGENCY ward doctor from Rotherham Hospital helped to keep radio DJ Greg James on his feet and in the swim during a gruelling charity challenge.

Dr Simon McCormick was the medical cover for the Radio 1 DJ as he completed   five consecutive triathlons across five UK cities in just five days for Sport Relief.

Dr McCormick was part of the 25-strong team supporting Greg — even matching him step for step on the road.

“I did each of the nine-mile runs with him, carrying an emergency kit and defibrillator on my back, which gave me a taste of what he was going through,” he said.

Greg cycled, swam and ran more than 200 miles but thankfully didn’t need to call for medical help most of the way.

Dr McCormick was called into action on the second day after Greg completed a freezing outdoor swim in Glasgow.

“He was very cold coming out of the water,” the doctor recalled.

“We got him warmed back up again and in an hour he was off out on his bike ride.”

At the last count the “Gregathlon” had raised £1 million for Sport Relief but the final total won't be known until the Sport Relief live event this weekend.

A documentary about the challenge is now available on BBC iPlayer.
