Proud of this great town

WHEN I moved to Rotherham as a seven-year-old, who could have envisaged that 33 years later I would still be living in this great town? For me, a move to London lasted a year and even when living there I returned most weekends as I missed home. We live in

One of my business interests, LifeSkills, was a southern-based training company, but the dream was to have a centre in my home town which we managed to achieve in 2010. In the past five years we have taught over 1,000 learners on our study programme and apprenticeship programmes, giving them the skills they need to progress into work or further education. LifeSkills is very much an important part of the education landscape here in Rotherham and having a waiting list of 130 for our August intake very much proves that. By offering a diverse menu of courses we have something for pretty much anyone.

There are many other businesses we have here in Rotherham that should be celebrated. Along with my good friend and business partner David Coldwell (pictured left with me) we train and manage professional boxers of all abilities, those starting out in the game and international stars such as World Champion Jamie McDonnell and his brother Gavin McDonnell who is European Champion, along with World Title challenger Tony Bellew. This is all from our gymnasium on Masbrough Street in Rotherham. Tagged onto the boxing company there is Coldwell Fitness where we work with our members to build fitness, better eating habits and confidence. So, a lot happens in that little gym not far from the old football ground.

In March of this year, History Parties— a company that has three owners (two are from Rotherham, Mark McGrail from SME and myself) — put on an event that will be talked about for years. Around 3,000 people including a large proportion from Rotherham danced until the early hours to the music from international superstar DJs such as Todd Terry, Farley Jackmaster Funk and Doorly. This was held at one of the most amazing dance music venues in the country at Magna, yes, in our home town of Rotherham.

The town has been damaged because of recent unforgivable events, but as a town we need to continue to pull together, let people know what a great place Rotherham is to live and work and be proud to be from this wonderful town. I know I am.
