Play tells of Christmas charity and goodwill

A HEART-warming tale of charity and goodwill to celebrate Christmas is the the Dilys Guite Players’ latest production at the Lantern Theatre, Sheffield.

Cranford at Christmas is set deep in the frosty English countryside — chestnuts are roasting and carols are being sung as the folk of Cranford busily prepare for Christmas. Join Miss Pole (Mel Crawley), Miss Matty (Laura Callaghan) and Mrs Jamieson (Agnetha Spencer) as they warm their frozen hands on cups of steaming cocoa and bedeck the houses with holly and mistletoe.

However, disaster threatens their cosy hubbub of festivity and the community must unit to keep the spirit of Christmas alive.

The DGP’s creative director, Sarah Spencer, is very pleased to be directing at this exciting time of year, especially after her last directorial success with The Crucible and encourages you to get into the festive spirit with this comical and rather lovely play.

Agnetha Spencer won a scholarship from a local performing arts school to help her to get into drama school.

In Cranford At Christmas, she plays Mrs Jamieson and Betty, and is over the moon about performing in a period play.

She also relished the opportunity of  working alongside her sister Sarah again and being part of the ever extending community that is the DGP.

Agnetha said: “After the Crucible I knew I couldn't pass up an opportunity to work with Sarah again.

“She’s an incredible director who pushes and nurtures her actors to create fantastic performances.

“I just adore being at this theatre, it holds a special place in my heart and I have a lot to be grateful for because of the Lantern.”
