Paddle for charity in a Chinese dragon boat

FUND-RAISERS will use paddle power to plough through the water of a Rotherham lake for a good cause this summer.

Schools, colleges and businesses are being urged to team up for dragon boat racing showdown at crews all come together for a spectacular day of excitement and entertainment on July 19 at Manvers Lake.

During the event, which starts at 10am, 17 teams of 11 will race along a 200-metre course in custom-built, 30ft brightly painted Chinese dragon boats.

Each crew can be made up of ten paddlers with a beating drummer at the front of the boat.

No experience is necessary and there will be plenty to entertain friends and family, including competitions, games, live entertainment and stalls.

Fancy dress is encouraged as teams compete to raise money for charity PHASE Worldwide and the Manvers Lake Trust.

Sarah Galvin, director of Rotherham-based PHASE Worldwide, which helps Himalayan communities, said: “We really want to involve the whole community in this event and we are excited about local schools, colleges, hospitals and businesses entering their teams.

“The challenge promises some spectacular racing and a fantastic day out for all the teams, their families and the public.

“There will be lots of fun, music and games, including a tombola, bouncy castle and donkey rides.”
