New and older faces of Rotherham United Women to kick off in memory of club legend Shirley Pollock

A team of current Rotherham United Women players are taking on players from past years in a charity match for Weston Park Cancer Charity and Dementia UK at Roundwood Pavilion in Parkgate next Friday, July 14.

They are paying tribute to the late Shirley Pollock (pictured), who was secretary of the club for 12 years and a familiar face on the touchline after her grand-daughter Amy joined the junior team.

Shirley, who died aged 84 in January 2020, was involved in women’s football at regional level and served as secretary of Sheffield and Hallamshire Women’s County League.

Rotherham United head of community Jamie Noble said Shirley had been “integral in establishing women’s football in Rotherham and even more pivotal in the running of our very own team here at Rotherham United”.

Club secretary Val Hoyle said of next Friday’s game, which will also include a DJ and disco: “Please come along and join us for a great cause in memory of the one and only Shirley Pollock and all the other greats of women’s football over the years.”

Admission to the game is £2 and kick-off is at 7pm.

RUWFC carried out three trial sessions for new players last month and will enter pre-season training the week after the charity match.
