Mother Goose brings adult panto to the stage in Wath

ADULT panto producer Liam Mellor expects a near sell-out audience in Wath will appreciate his bawdy stage show next month — as some spectators down south don’t always find it quite so amusing.

Mexborough-born Liam and his ten-strong cast are on a 35-venue tour of the nation with X-rated production entitled Mother Goose Cracks One Off.

They are lined up to play the Montgomery Hall in Wath on Saturday, May 6, and are confident they will get as big a laugh there as anywhere – and probably the best audience interaction.

The show is described as a “fun and filthy adult panto for big boys and girls”, so parents are advised to leave the kids at home.

Liam and his Hot Rock Productions team had a successful tour last year with a show called Sleeping with Beauty.

The 34-year-old producer said: “There are quite a few southern venues where our jokes don’t seem to land as well as they do up north.

“In Yorkshire, you can guarantee an audience who are up for a laugh and Wath is a great 250-seater venue for us.

“I am a Mexborough lad and we are a bit confused there.

“We have a Doncaster postcode and have a Rotherham telephone area code, so we don’t really where we are, to be honest, but what we do know is South Yorkshire people certainly do like a laugh.”

In terms of rudeness, Liam says Mother Goose is more of a risqué entertainment event rather than a full-blown Chubby Brown-style show.

“It’s like Carry On films — there is no nudity, no c-words, just a play on adult themes and 99 per cent of audiences love the cheeky lines and innuendoes.”

Shows are popular with hen parties, but the nature of audiences generally varies, Liam says.

“We’ve had a party of ladies in their 70s arrive and we wondered if they’d gone to the wrong panto, but it turns out they had seen the Chippendales last week — and I’ve not made that up,” he said.

“Our version of Mother Goose normally involves some audience banter — they like to have a heckle — but it is inclusive and all in all a good fun night out.”

Liam, who is a writer and presenter and used to perform amateur musicals at Montgomery Hall before turning professional at 17, originally got the idea for an adult panto from his step-father.

“When I was a kid at secondary school he used to watch Jim Davidson and Sinderella on VHS and I loved it,” he said.

“We had a go staging one ourselves in Billingham and it has blossomed to us doing UK tours.”
