Maltby over-60s community group celebrates a successful year

A COMMUNITY group for older folk in Maltby toasted a successful year of reducing isolation and helping out good causes.

The Bevan Crescent Over-60s Group, supported by Age UK Rotherham, meets twice a week for a chat, quiz and singalong.

And members also keep out an eye for worthy causes needing a helping hand in the community.

Organiser Keith Stringer said: “This group gains much pleasure out of helping other people whenever help is wanted.

“Last year we helped and made donations to the National Autistic Society and Age UK Rotherham.

“They have also organised and collected three car loads of food and clothing, which eventually was sent to Calais in France.

“On Yorkshire Day, a fair was organised at the Bevan Crescent centre which raised £700 for a local lad with autism to buy him a ‘befriending dog’.”

In the run-up to Christmas, the group collected 20 bags of food for Voluntary Action Rotherham’s Christmas appeal.

Keith said: “We meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and our current members are aged between 71 and 95.

“Everyone’s birthday is celebrated and the group would group welcome anyone who would like to attend the coffee morning every Tuesday.

“Admission and refreshments are free, and it has a lovely warm atmosphere.

“The members like to get out and about and last year enjoyed two visits to Clifton Park that were organised by Age UK. They also enjoyed a visit to the Lifewise Centre in Hellaby.”
