Hop along to the town centre for Easter

TOWN centre shopkeepers are urging people to don their bunny ears and enjoy a “Hoppy Easter” with them.

More than 30 businesses in Rotherham town centre are supporting a series of activities on Saturday, April 23—the day before Easter Sunday—with everything from egg rolling to go-kart racing on offer.

There will also be circus skills workshops by Rotherham Youth Circus and an appearance by the Easter Bunny at 11am.

Storytelling, hook-a-duck and egg and spoon races are also among the activities on offer for this fun packed day, which runs from 10am to 1.30pm.

Kara Chapman, owner of The Whistlestop Sweet Shop in the Imperial Buildings, is holding a pre-decorated egg competition.

She said: “So many businesses are contributing to make it a brilliant day out for all the family.

“Everyone is welcome to bring their egg along to the shop before 10am on  April 23.

“The eggs will then automatically be entered into the competition, with prizes for age categories four and under, five- to eight-year-olds and eight and over.

“I’m going to display all the decorated eggs in the shop window, so everyone can see the different designs.

“The Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Rose McNeely, will be judging the winners at noon.”

The shop is also the place to buy tickets for a raffle in aid of Rotherham Hospice, with an Easter hamper as the top prize.

ACT for Rotherham, Rotherham Borough Council and the town’s Chamber of Commerce are also backing the event, dubbed Rotherham Rocks Hoppy Easter.

The council’s events manager, Marie Hayes, said: “We have been amazed by the fantastic response from town centre businesses.

“This event really demonstrates how joint working can create something special.”
