Fund-raisers walk for hospice

MAJOR fund-raising events joined forces and attracted 243 people for a walk around Rotherham.

Almost 50 opted for the full 25-mile challenge as the Rotherham Rotary Roundwalk and Rush To Walk took place.

The new Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr John and Kath Foden, set the fund-raisers on their way from All Saints’ Square in their first mayoral event.

Twelve-year-old Rebecca Sowden battled footwear problems to finish — applauded over the finish line after nine hours with her neighbour Shakira Hussain.

Jon Hallam took the Men’s Rotary Plate after completing the 25 miles in 4hrs 28mins. Janet Clark took the Ladies’ Sheldon Rowley Memorial Salver in a time of 5hr 38mins.

Rotarian John Wadsworth said: “The day was blessed with ideal conditions for walking, and only two starters had to pull out.”

Rush to Walk raises money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in memory of Sandra Rush, who died of breast cancer in 2002.

Organiser Gillian Headon said: “We’re pleased with the final turnout and hope the event will bring in a sizeable sum to add to the £170,000 collected in previous years by the two organisations.”
