Film crews take over Wentworth Woodhouse "to shoot HBO show"

FILM crews have descended once again on Rotherham amid rumours a new show starring Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant is being shot here.

The HBO series The Regime is understood to have taken over Wentworth Woodhouse for filming.

The programme, which has the working title "The Palace, relates the demise of a European regime amid the glamour of a historic palace, with Winslet playing a dominant authoritarian ruler.

The mansion’s owners, Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, are notoriously tight-lipped about film companies using the property, which has previously hosted ITV’s Victoria and the award-winning crew for the film Darkest Hour.

But director Stephen Frears, when interviewed about the programme for the BBC, confirmed that he would be shooting in Rotherham, noting: “Rotherham has got the second biggest house in England after Buckingham Palace.”

WWPT said in a Facebook post that the house and its gardens would be closed until Saturday, April 29, “due to an exciting project”.
