Event to focus on Mexborough war hero

A STORY of 1940s heroism will be brought to life on 21st century technology next week.

Former Mexborough pub landlord, Roy Machin, served as air gunner on Lancaster bombers during World War Two.

In an early operation, he displayed such cool bravery in his burning bomber that his heroism was recognised immediately and he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal.

Now his story will be told in a Power Point presentation by local historian Giles Brearley and military enthusiast Alan Downing at the Ferryboat Inn, Church Street, Mexborough on next Tuesday from 7.15pm.

Giles will tell how Roy and his parents went to Buckingham Palace to receive his medal from the King in person and how he and his crew mates were so proficient they were quickly transferred to the famous Dambusters.

Giles said: “Roy was involved in many high profile mission including sinking the Tirpitz, the pride of Germany's fleet.

“He saw active duty to the end of the conflict and, despite the incredible odds,

survived.

“Roy was a private person and never spoke of his exploits.

“However, he kept records of his airtime career which have been invaluable in putting his story together.”

Roy died in 2006 but family pictures and genuine operational photographs are being used to illustrate his wartime career.

Admission is £1.50 for members of Mexborough Heritage Group and £2 for non-members.
