Colourful Diwali celebration of “good over evil”

DOZENS of members of Rotherham’s Hindu community hailed “the victory of good over evil” at a colourful celebration event.

Diwali, also known as the festival of light, traditionally commemorates the god Rama’s rescue of his wife Sita from captivity and the the victory of deity Krishna over the evil Narakasur.

The event at Harworth Town Hall was attended by more than 200 people, including the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Tajamal Khan.

Dr Arun Viswanath, a committee member of Rotherham Hindu Community, said those attending the event, which included lights, fireworks and colourful traditional clothing, had “showed great enthusiasm with a variety of cultural programmes showcasing their talents in music, drama and a colourful fashion show”.

He said the mayor had hailed the community for bringing people together and encouraged that they have much more to offer to the wider diverse community in Rotherham with their professional backgrounds, such as doctors, pharmacists and IT experts.
