Christmas campaign for young and old

A CHARITY club is gearing up its Christmas preparations ahead of a seasonal campaign that is “loved by young and old”.

Maltby Lions and Rother Valley Lions club — who have aimed since 1978 to help others in need — has been undertaking maintenance and ensuring its sleigh will be ready in time for the traditional rides in December.

Joshua Spurr, who is president of the club, said the event meant a lot to people in the area and he has been working with volunteers since September to get the sleigh rides organised.

Joshua, from Maltby, said: “We have to start preparations early to make sure everything goes well during our Christmas sleigh ride seasons.

“We go across Maltby and the Rother Valley area every night up until Christmas Eve.

“People absolutely adore it. To see the kid’s faces is magical when Father Chritsmas is on the sleigh.

“I remember growing up with it as a kid and being in awe of it.

“Now I get to be part of it which is a privilege and an honour to do.

“It can be challenging but there are some great people behind the scenes at this club who make it happen.”

The sleigh rides rely on donations collected each year to keep on going for the next generation, Mr Spurr said.

“We play a vital role in our community and feel it is rewarding to give something back to others,” he added.

“It’s one of the most magical times of the year and is great for community spirit.

“We would never want to see it go but we have so many wonderful activities to organise that the money helps us annually.

“We managed to raise over £17,500 last year which was incredible.

“That’s all down to the tireless efforts of the club and volunteers who make it possible.

“Seeing people enjoy the sleigh rides year on year makes us more determined to make the next year even better.”

The sleigh rides will take place between December 9 and December 24 and the timetable will be released later.
