Astronomers prepare for explosive presentation

AMATEUR astronomers are preparing to hear an explosive presentation from a university professor.

Members of the Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society will welcome Professor Paul Crowther from the University of Sheffield for a special talk about supernovae from 7.45pm on April 23.

A spokesman for the group said: “He will talk about the explosion in discoveries of supernovae over the past decade, emphasising the diversity of core collapse supernovae now known, including recently identified super luminous supernovae and supernova imposters.”

Prof Crowther will also discuss the supernovae themselves plus the progenitor stars that are believed to be responsible for these incredible astrophysical transients.”

The presentation is free to members, with visitors asked to contribute a £2 entry fee.
