A DEARNE Valley celebrations of arts and crafts has been axed after 38 years.

Darfield Amenity Society has put on a two-day summer exhibition every summer since the late 1970s.

But the chairman, Geoffrey Hutchinson, revealed this week that the show had been scrapped.

“We feel that the annual exhibition in its present form has run its course,” he said.

“Our volunteers have got older and fewer in number. A great deal of work is involved in setting up the exhibition each year that we can now no longer cope with.”

Artists will still have the chance to show off their work in the summer as Darfield Museum is hosting an open art exhibition in July and August.

Exhibitors will be able to enter two pieces of their art work to hang during the two months.

3D work will also be encouraged although display space is limited.

Potential exhibitors are now invited to get in touch with the museum on 01226 754593.

Mr Hutchinson added: “We hope to see a wide variety of artistic endeavour on the walls of the museum and so take over as an outlet from the annual exhibition."
