A night of nostalgia to remember for our Vera Lynn fans: VIDEO
The sell-out event was at Pastures Lodge, Mexborough, on Tuesday when more than 180 guests packed the function room.
A two-course wartime meal was enjoyed, as well as a talk by Joanne Brunt, from Remember When, about life in the 1940s and a Vera Lynn tribute act by Lorrie Brown.
A party of 52 attended from Dane’s View Centre at Dalton and a party of 36 attended from Conisbrough St Peter’s Church Tea Leaf Club.
Five of the guests were celebrating their birthdays, including Jack Haigh from Garden Lane Residential Home in Conisbrough, who was celebrating his 83rd birthday, and Arthur Cockram from Rotherham who will be 90 this Sunday.
Guests arrived at noon and were served bangers and mash followed by bread and butter pudding.
Throughout the afternoon, guests were on their feet, waving their Union Jack flags and singing along to favourites: Sincerely Yours, Lili Marleen and We’ll Meet Again.
Sadie Stobbard (80), from East Herringthorpe, said: “The event was brilliant. They played some of my favourite songs, songs that my dad would sing to me when I was a little girl. I got emotional at times.
“Because I’m 80 now, I remember most events that happened during the war, so it was just lovely to take a trip down memory lane and share stories.”
Husband and wife John and Gail Ridge from Brinsworth said: “We’ve already booked tickets for the next event, we had such a good day.
“The two-course wartime meal was delicious, it was great to sing along to Vera Lynn and the Remember When talk was really interesting.
"It brought back a lot of memories for me as I sold corsets when I was a young girl, so when she brought them up it did make me laugh.”
Event organiser Tracie Midgley said: “It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves, who had strong memories of that era.
“Tickets for our even bigger show, A Salute to the 1940s, are now on sale.”
A Salute to the 1940s will take place at The Pastures Lodge, Mexborough, on June 25, from 11.30am-5pm.
Tickets are £20 including a two-course fish and chip supper and homemade cakes and a 1940s variety show with tributes to Gracie Fields, The Andrew Sisters, George Formby and, again, Lorrie Brown as Dame Vera Lynn.
Tickets are on sale at Pastures Lodge bar or from the events team on 01709 571111.
