Lynn Dunning, CEO at NCMME says: “We are thrilled to be hosting a performance by Grimethorpe Colliery Band at the Museum. What better way to celebrate the longstanding association between brass bands and coal mining, than with a performance from the world-famous colliery band”.
Formed in 1917, during the First World War, the band is a British institution and the sound of the legendary Grimethorpe Colliery Band is unmistakeable.
National and British Open Champions on numerous occasions, the band’s contest successes include 16 Brass In Concert Championship titles, 11 times Yorkshire Regional Champions, two English National Championship victories, four times British Open Champions and four times National Champion Brass Band of Great Britain.
International recognition for Grimethorpe came with the hit film Brassed Off, the plot of which was based on Grimethorpe's struggles against pit closures, and whose soundtrack was recorded by the band.
The band's strong connection to coal mining, capturing the proud spirit of coal mining communities in their performances, makes their appearance at the Museum even more special.
Visitors will hear brass banding classics, sublime soloists and top entertainment from the world's most famous colliery band – all within the iconic surroundings of the Museum’s original colliery buildings.
The band will perform two hour-long sets with a short interval in the museum’s Conference Centre at the evening performance.
