Trailblazing composer Mia helps teacher boost diversity in music

A TEACHER is pursuing her passion of diversifying the male-dominated arena of music — with a little help from one of the industry’s pioneers.

Michelle Lockwood invited trail-blazing musician Mia Windsor to put on workshops at Winterhill School in Kimberworth for girls and students of marginalised genders like trans and non-binary.

The project saw Michelle working with Yorkshire Sound Women Network to run a Wired@Winterhill, a specialist music technology workshop open to those in Years 7 to 10.

She said Mia, a musician and composer who uses artificial intelligence within her music, was “a great role model for our young students”.

Michelle added: “As a female who studied music technology at college and university, I have experienced the huge gap with females in music technology, and therefore champion projects like this.

“When I did music tech at university, I the only female on my course.

“We are now getting a lot more girls into music and have three girl drummers in our school jam band.

“It’s something I’m really passionate about doing at Winterhill.”
