Strictly star Joanne Clifton sends Dinnington am-dram company good luck message ahead of Addams Family shows

A THEATRE company with 100 years of history is back on stage next week with a musical which is one of the creepiest, kookiest and “altogether ookiest” around.

And Dinnington Operatic Society, who are staging The Addams Family Musical at the Lyric Theatre in Dinnington, have been given the backing of one who knows all about staging the show.

Strictly champion Joanne Clifton sent the cast a video message in which she urged potential audience members to head along for a healthy dose of dark humour and spooky entertainment.

It’s fitting DOS are marking their centenary with a show at the Lyric, which has been their HQ for most of the company’s life and to which they returned 20 years ago.

In her message, Joanne said: “Oh my god, what an amazing show. I was lucky enough to play Morticia and you’ve got to watch it.

“It’s such a good show full of...” —at which point she slips into Morticia’s voice — “...darkness and grief and unspeakable sorrow”.

The Addams Family has been given the TV, animated, live-action film and now stage treatment since creepy couple Gomez and Morticia, their chilling kids Pugsley and Wednesday, and bizarre sidekicks Uncle Fester, Thing and Cousin It first hit screens in 1964.

It should prove another crowd-pleasing family show for Dinnington Operatic, who staged Cinderella last January.

Publicity officer Joanne Thornewell said: “It’s an absolute scream. It’s the second time I’ve done this show and it is very funny.

“There is adult humour which will go over the heads of the kids as well.

“For the musical, they created an ensemble of Addams Family ancestors who are all ghosts.

“They all have their own personalities. It's quite a clever idea.”

The Addams Family Musical runs from next Tuesday to Saturday at the Lyric.
