The stunning photos on display cover celestial scenes such as the Milky Way, the

Northern Lights, galaxies, nebulas, the sun and the moon.

The technicalities of taking these images are equally spectacular — from home-made telescopes, stacking hundreds of images to make one final image, to exposures lasting 14 to 80 hours.

Steve Mettam, Rotherham Advertiser photographer said: “As a photographer, it is inspiring that these colourful and dramatic images are not only taken in exotic and remote locations, but also from more accessible places.

“Due to light pollution, you usually need to go to an area that is completely dark, but one of the images is taken from a council housing estate after the lights have been turned out, showing that you don’t need to travel far to get a stunning shot.”

In 2018, the competition entered its tenth year, receiving over 4,200 submissions from 91 countries.

The exhibition is on now and runs till Saturday, April 27, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing.
