Pioneering director Gurinder Chadha to give talk ahead of new film

Gurinder (57) is credited with bringing Asian cinema into the mainstream with Bend It Like Beckham, starring Keira Knightley in 2002, and Bride and Prejudice two years later.

Her 1993 film, Bhaji on the Beach, was the first full-length feature film made by a British Asian woman and received a BAFTA Nomination for best British film and the Evening Standard British film award for best newcomer to British cinema.

In 2006, she was awarded an OBE for services to the British film industry.

Her latest film, Viceroy’s House, stars Hugh Bonneville and Gillian Anderson as Lord Mountbatten and Lady Edwina.

The film is set during the partitioning of India in 1947 and explores the conflict and consequences surrounding the decision to divide the country and the creation of Pakistan as a new Muslim homeland, which led to an exodus of 14 million people – including Gurinder’s grandfather.

Gurinder will visit The Showroom Cinema in Sheffield on Friday, March 3, for the screening of Viceroy’s House and will take part in a question and answer session after.

Showroom film programmer, Joan Parsons, said: “Gurinder is one of Britain’s finest filmmakers and we are delighted to have her as our guest. 

“Viceroy’s House is an incredibly personal film for her, taking inspiration from her own family’s experience of partition.”
