New chapter for re-opened libraries

RELAUNCH events are marking the new chapters at libraries boosted by a borough-wide £1.8 million investment.

Poet Ray Hearne cut the ribbon at Wath, which has seen one of the more extensive refurbishments.

Kimberworth Library reopened last Thursday, followed by Dinnington on Tuesday and Greasbrough on February 28.

Mowbray Gardens and Wickersley return on March 4 and 8 respectively.

Children’s events marking the reopenings include storytelling with Zowie Norris, arts and crafts sessions, rhymetime, mini melodies, Patsy’s Fun Show as well as a talk by the RSPB.

And for the grown-ups, there are photography competitions, writing sessions, yoga and board games.

Cllr Dave Sheppard, RMBC cabinet member for social inclusion, said: “It’s great to see the work that is being carried out to improve libraries across Rotherham.

“Libraries have always been an integral hub in our communities and it’s great to see them reopen, better than ever before.

“It’s so important they evolve to meet the needs of the residents.”

Changes have included redecoration, upgraded IT facilities, and new shelving and furniture.

The improvement works were paid for by the council’s budget for the current financial year. This also included a £4 million commitment to a new central library near Rotherham Markets.
