Idea jams lead to new art exhibition

A NEW exhibition is giving six Rotherham artists a chance to show off their talents after a series of brainstorming “idea-jams”.

Cabinets of Curiosity, which will run at Clifton Park Museum until May 15, is the result of experienced artist Paul Evans working with the group — who have taken on the name CP Studio — to develop a collective response to the museum’s collection.

Invited by Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance to join in, each artist has been given a “micro-commission” and has attended “idea-jams” at the museum and in its archives.

They came up with the theme of Cabinets of Curiosity and have dreamed up a range of responses, from a contemporary dance film and a pattern book to a mask inspired by the Green Man from Rotherham Minster and even artefacts formed from plasticine.

Paul said the artists involved — Kevan Cadman, Neath Champion-Shorr, Ken Horne, Tair Rafiq, Uzma Rani and Teresa Sayner — had aimed “to draw out unexpected, imaginative connections between natural and man-made objects, and how ideas of ‘heritage’ can interweave with environmental concerns and contemporary responses to nature”.

The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm until today and from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am until 5pm during April.
