A show for all

A NEW play coming to Rotherham next week innovatively weaves techniques to benefit deaf audience members into its script.

A Very Odd Birthday Party, a new production by writer Hannah Donelon, with live, traditional music by Hawkseed Theatre, will be at the Civic next Monday.

The story follows mother-to-be Eveline and her dad Michael Moriarty, who is living with dementia, on a journey examining the humour and trauma of being a first and second-generation immigrant in the UK and the complexities of family, working-class identity and memory.

Producer Lauren Cresswell said: “It’s really important to us at Hawkseed to make theatre as accessible and enjoyable as we can, particularly providing inclusivity for those with different needs within the community.

“We’ve been working closely with Chloe Clarke, an audio description consultant, to creatively embed audio description into the script to ensure a more integrated experience for theatre-goers.”

Lauren said the commitment to inclusivity extended to alternative ticket options, including “Pay What You Decide”, for those facing financial difficulties.
