World Cup comes to town

FANS flocked to Herringthorpe yesterday as the Rugby World Cup came to town.

As part of the official countdown to the showpiece event, which kicks off at Twickenham on September 18, the famous Webb Ellis Trophy is on a nationwide tour – and Rotherham Rugby Club was picked as one of the main stopping off points.

It’s the third time the trophy has been to Rotherham, the first visit having been in 1991when it was paraded at Clifton Park Museum while the last was in 2003 as part of England’s World Cup winning celebrations.

The tour entourage – amid tight security – was met by Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Maggi Clark, and officials from the Titans.

Former England star Mike Harrison, who skippered the national side for the inaugural World Cup in 1987, was a special guest while Titans favourite Alfie To’oala, who played for Samoa in the 2007 competition, dropped in to join the celebrations.
