Wilson brought down to earth after podium

JUSTIN Wilson powered to a podium place in Saturday’s IndyCar round in Detroit — only to be brought crashing down to earth 24 hours later.

After impressing in the Indianapolis 500 the previous week, Wilson drove from deep in the pack to secure a strong finish in Saturday’s race, the first of two successive weekend events at the Michegan circuit.

He started from 16th on the grid for the 70-lap race before taking third at the chequered flag.

But the following day, Wilson could do nothing about being caught up in a multi-car crash which ended his hopes of a back-to-back success. He had climbed from eighth on the grid to fourth before the 22nd-lap accident led to suspension damage which forced him out.

Said Wilson, whose Dale Coyne Racing team-mate Mike Conway won the opener: “To get two cars on the podium is just so satisfying for everyone on the team. It’s been a lot of hard work, but everyone at Dale Coyne Racing has proven that we’re capable of running at the front."
