We were below par, says Evans

ROTHERHAM United manager Steve Evans was happy with a point after a difficult afternoon against Crawley Town at the New York Stadium.

Prolific winger Kieran Agard pounced deep in stoppage time to rescue a 2-2 draw from a match Evans’ former club did enough to win.

Agard’s first goal, from the penalty spot, cancelled out a 23rd minute opener from recently departed Millers loanee Matt Tubbs.

Crawley’s vast improvement in the second half saw Josh Simpson put them back in front from a slick move involving Tubbs.

The visitors couldn’t capitalise on two more clear openings before the Millers’ persistence paid off when Agard turned in his 15th goal of the season from close range.

Even after that, there was still time for Adam Collin to pull off a stunning triple save to deny Crawley a winner.

Evans said: “We should have been three up in the first ten minutes but if you don’t take those chances then you get punished. We got punished twice for sloppy defending and I don’t think any of our players will go home and think they’ve been on the top of their game.

“We were below par in all areas of the team so when you score late you have to be happy with a point.”

The point was enough to take Rotherham up a place to fifth in League One. A defeat would have dropped them to seventh, underlining the importance of Agard’s leveller.
