Young sailors standing Tall

Max Nicholson and Elliot Richards headed for the high seas when they took part in the last leg of the Tall Ships race from Norway to Hartlepool.

The daring duo, from Wickersley School, crewed the good ship Maybe on the voyage from Kristiansand.

Maybe was built in the 1920s and is rumoured to have been commandeered by Rommel in the Second World War to entertain his officers.

The pair had a great time sailing over the North Sea, working shifts to ensure the boat was manned on deck at all times.

They were able to set sail thanks to the support of Rotherham Borough Council's Quids- In' fund and used it to raise sponsorship for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The amount raised stands at £634, which they will continue adding to with the support of the headmaster when they return to school in September.

Max, a member of Ulley Sailing Club, is already an accomplished dinghy sailor.

He made his mark sailing a Laser Radial for the club in the Yorkshire and Humberside Youth Sailing Association Travellers series which takes place at various venues across the region.

Max will be returning to their home at Ulley Country Park later this summer when the

reservoir is topped up with water.

Mark Burkit, Ulley's commodore, said: "We are looking for more young people to join

the club to strengthen our youth team.

"Ulley has a great heritage in producing world class sailors, not least our very own Paul Goodison, who is current Olympic, European and World Champion in the Laser class."
