Winter Youth Olympics beckon for ice hockey ace Abby

THE new year is guaranteed to get off to an exciting start for ice hockey player Abby Rowbotham.

The 14-year-old from Aston Academy has qualified for this month's Winter Youth Olympics after coming through a selection process.

Last summer the top ten girls and top ten boys in Great Britain born in 2004 and 2005 were invited to complete a skills challenge. Times were submitted to the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation).

All players were added to a long list along with all other countries who did the test and, based upon the timings, four girls and three boys were selected from GB, including Abby.

The youngest player, she is ranked 54th from the 88 selected to play in the Games.

The 2020 Youth Olympics take place from January 9-15 in Lausanne in Switzerland and Abby flies out on January 7 for a two-day training camp.

A member of the Sheffield Mixed Academy and U16s girls team, she has been playing ice hockey for five years.
