Stubbs' solicitor, Mr Frank Rogers, told Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, during a hearing for speeding offences, he would not name the club Stubbs had been interviewed by but said it was a "Lancashire-based club relegated to the old third division" and he was likely to start with them by June 1.

This could refer to the Latics, who are second bottom in the Championship and have been relegated to League One.

Stubbs pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to driving at 68mph on Wednesday, September 14, at 4.50pm and at 73mph the next day at 1pm on the A616 Stocksbridge bypass.

District Judge for Sheffield, Ms Naomi Redhouse, sentenced him to a £150 fine for each offence, a £30 victim surcharge, £285 costs and a 14-day disqualification.

Stubbs was Rotherham United manager for just three months, during which the team won one out of 14 games and amassed only six points in the Championship.

When contacted for a comment, Wigan Athletic told the Advertiser that they “denied all  knowledge” of Alan Stubbs beginning work with them.
