Why Rotherham United manager Paul Warne won't be talking to QPR boss Steve McClaren about loan player Ryan Manning

Manning is on a season-long deal with the Millers, but Hoops boss Steve McClaren could decide to recall the 22-year-old midfielder in the New Year transfer window.

"Will I use the opportunity to take about Ryan? No," said Warne whose side are unbeaten in six matches following last Saturday's 2-2 derby draw with Sheffield United which left them 19th in the Championship.

"I am not saying it would be crass, but after the game if we have won then it would feel like I am rubbing Steve's hooter in it and if he has won it would feel like I am going with my begging bowl.

"If he comes in for a drink and I get on well with him, I might just ask if I can phone him in a couple of weeks. That's as far as I will go."

Warne would like to keep all of his loan contingent - goalkeeper Marek Rodak, right-back Zak Vyner, centre-half Sean Raggett and midfielders Richie Towell and Manning - at the club beyond January.

"There has been no dialogue involving me," Warne said. "I know that Paul Douglas (chief operating officer) touches base with the loan clubs every now and then.

"There is sort of like a polite silence, no-one dares ask. Everyone tries to keep a positive outlook and not worry about it yet.

"Probably before the Christmas mayhem they may be in a better position of knowing what they want to do."

The Millers have yet to decide whether to bring back any of their own players they have out on loan: strikers David Ball (Bradford City) and Jery Yates (Carlisle United), central defenders Michael Ihiekwe (Accrington Stanley) and Manny Onariase (Dagenham & Redbridge), left-back Ben Purrington (AFC Wimbledon) and winger Alex Bray (York City).

Manning is ineligible to play against in-form QPR and has been of little use to Warne in Rotherham's preparations.

"I have asked him today about information on QPR" the boss joked. "I might as well have asked my deceased dog. He literally came out with nothing, so thanks for that, Ry!"
