We're on the up, says Titans' chief after statement win

ROTHERHAM Titans' head coach Joe Barker says there's no reason why the club can't challenge for a top-end place in National One after their battling win over previous leaders Chinnor.

The big-spenders from Oxfordshire were expected to provide the Clifton Lane men with a massive test, but in a dogged display the home side eked out a 32-26 victory to propel them to sixth in the table.

And now, sitting four points off the top ahead of this Saturday's trip to lowly Esher, Barker says there's no reason why Titans can't kick ahead.

"I don't see why we can't push on. That win shows to the rest of the league that we've got something here," said Barker.

"Now it's all about consistency and we have to train really hard and with the intensity that we need.

"We have to take each game as it comes and every week we'll be going out to win."

Titans hit back after going behind to a converted try in only the fourth minute.

But any fears were allayed as two tries from winger Connor Field plus others from Alex Dolly and Ali Thompson put the hosts 27-14 ahead at the break.

Chinnor did have the strong wind advantage in the second half and despite Ellis Abrahams putting Rotherham further ahead the advantage was whittled down with two tries and, as the clock ticked down there was only six points between the sides, with the Oxford men camped on the home line.

But a terrific defensive display kept them at bay, Titans now preparing for this weekend's clash at Esher.

Added Barker: "We handled things really well in the first 20 minutes of the second half and we couldn't have done anything better.

"It's about how you handle pressure and at the end they were very close to our line but we held out.

"What I know I've got with these boys is character and that's been built from the top of the club to the bottom."
