The 38-year-old will referee the big game between Spain and Holland in Johannesburg, having been told the good news on Thursday night. Along with assistants Darren Cann and Mike Mullarkey, Howard was one of tem refereeing teams in the reckoning.

Hide AdAnd he told the Advertiser today: "It's been amazing and we're really looking forward to it.
"It's an honour and a privilege to have been chosen and I'm lucky that I've got some great lads in my team."
Tonight's game starts at 7.30pm.
