Webb favourite to ref World Cup Final

HOWARD Webb is emerging as the favourite to take charge of next week’s World Cup Final in South Africa.

The Rotherham ref has been a shining light in his three games so far in the competition and his iron-fisted approach and strong relationship with his two assistants has seen the offs slashed to 5/4  to take charge of the biggest game on the planet.

The speculation will be heightened by the fact that the English trio haven’t been awarded a quarter final.

But Webb told the Advertiser yesterday that he faces stiff competition for the plum game at Soccer City in Johannesburg next Sunday.

“It would be fantastic to get the Final,” he said.

“We haven’t been given a quarter final, but then again the Brazil-Chile game might have been our last involvement. There are some really good officials over here and they are all in contention for the last few games, but getting the Final would be the ultimate."
