Warne: One up front was the right call

ROTHERHAM United manager Paul Warne has defended his decision to play with one striker in last night's Championship defeat to Hull.

There has been criticism from some fans that Nigel Adkins' low-on-confidence side were shown too much respect.

The Millers chief insisted that playing a 4-4-2 hadn't worked in previous games and that going with a five-man midfield to try and give the team a solid base was the right option this time.

"I played two up front against Brentford and got hammered," he said. "We played two up front against Ipswich and didn't get a kick in the first half until I put Kyle Vassell out wide.

"I played one up against Leeds on Saturday and I thought our shape was good in and out of possession. We deserved something there.

"The way Hull play, they keep the ball quite a lot and if we'd have played two front, our two in midfield wouldn't have got a look in. That means we would have had to go direct all the time against really good centre-halves.

"If it was my mistake we'd lost the game, I'd hold my hands up. But I think we were set up right. We were hard to break down but individual errors cost us."

Gutted...Kyle Vassell at the final whisle.

Leading in the first half through Richard Wood's header, the Millers conceded three times before Jamie Proctor's 75th minute reply set up a grandstand finish. It wasn't enough to stave off a 3-2 defeat.

"I was hugely disappointed with the goals we conceded," added Warne. "The two goals either side of half time defined the game.

"Both were avoidable. No disrespect to Hull, they played well, but it wasn't like they were cutting us open on every occasion. It was a competitive game.

"They had more of the ball than us, which happens quite a lot. We changed the system and on another night one might have dropped in for us.

"We have an honest bunch who stick their hands up and apologise when they've done wrong but we need to eradicate the errors."
