ROTHERHAM Golf Club's Ben Schmidt has been named in the 2021 Walker Cup team.
At 18, Schmidt is the youngest in the ten-man squad and he'll fly out with his Great Britain and Ireland team-mates to take on the United States in Seminole, Florida, over the weekend of May 8 and 9.
In 2019 Ben became just the fourth player in history to win the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship (Brabazon Trophy) and its boys’ equivalent, the Carris Trophy, in the same year.
He also finished 15 shots clear of the rest of the field in the amateur game's “unofficial major”, the Justin Rose Junior Golf Championship.
After a Covid-disrupted 2020, Schmidt will be looking forward to a more active year as GB&I bid to win back the Walker Cup secured by the US at Royal Liverpool two years ago.
The teenager is following in the footsteps of Rotherham clubmate Danny Willett, who made the Walker Cup squad in 2007.
