Two legs better than four as Kimberworth Striders outrun the horses!

KIMBERWORTH Striders took on racers of the four-legged variety in a challenge with a difference.

They travelled down to Llanwrtyd Wells in Mid Powys to join 1,200 competitors in the iconic Man v Horse event.

They had the simple task of trying to beat the horses across a 22.5 mile course through hilly but stunning Welsh countryside.

Trail runner Ricky Lightfoot from Ellenborough AC became only the third person to win the race since it started in 1980, beating the horse, Invictus, by just over two minutes in a time of 2 hrs 22min 33 secs.

The runners were given eight minutes' grace before the horses set off.

A total of 37 horses finished the course and Striders beat a few of them.

Sarah Millns was the first Strider back in 4:05.28. Adelle Marsden followed in 4:05.32 and Paul Greenwood in 4:16.24. All three were successful in beating some of the four-legged friends.

Vicki and Steve Beckitt ran together and posted 5:15.55 but just missed out on a moral victory.

In the Barnsley Boundary race, Striders came up against tough opposition but put in a cracking effort.

Brian Miranda got things underway for the men's squad on the first five-mile leg between Cannon Hall and Bretton Park and clocked 41.57.

Leg 2 (Bretton Park to Brierley) is 10.5 miles and Mick Noone timed 1:27.29

Lee Rawson took the baton from Brierley to Thurnscoe and timed 54.37 on the 6.6 mile route.

Gavin Edley timed 45.00 on leg 4's 6.4 miles (Thurnscoe to Brampton) before David Stocks took over and ran 44.55 for his 5.1-mile section between Brampton and Tankersley.

On leg 6 Dan Birkinshaw timed 1:24.24 on the 11.4-miles route from Tankersley to Wortley Station.

Kieron Caukwell took over and headed for Langsett Barn and clocked 55.37 for the 6.5 miles.

Pat Rooney ran the 10.5 milles from Langsett to Winscar Reservoir in 1:03.03 and on the final leg of four miles Lee Weatherall timed 30.30 and ended back at Cannon Hall.

Mixed team: Leg 1 Amanda Wassell 49.34, Leg 2 Rebecca Stocks 2:04.10, Leg 3 Natalie Lowe 1:08.49, Leg 4 Max Polson. 53.02, Leg 5 Emily Lunn. 59.09, Leg 6 Graham Dodd 2:05.26, Leg 7 Carly Sykes. 1:12.12, Leg 8 Lauren Corcoran 1:03.30, Leg 9 Alan France 1:51.25, Leg 10 Samantha Weatherall 36.31.
