Treeton contemplate next step to becoming cricket champions

TREETON can be cricket  league champions in 2022 with a little bit more consistency.

That's the view of captain Sam Drury as the Washfield Lane outfit digest another good summer.

Preserving their status as Rotherham's top side, they finished a creditable third in the top flight of the Yorkshire Southern Premier League after a persistent chase of eventual champions Appleby Frodingham and runners-up Sheffield Collegiate.

Defeats in the last two games to Hallam and Barnsley meant Treeton had to settle for a place outside the top two, and Drury has no complaints with that.

“I think third is where we deserved to finish,” he said. “Appleby were very consistent and you can't take that away from them.

“We have let ourselves down in a couple of games we shouldn't have lost. 

“We are just a little bit of better consistency away from being right at the top of the league.”

Drury says there is a fantastic spirit in the Treeton dressing room which the club is intent on preserving.

And while he is happy with the balance of the team, there is always room for improvement.

“We are pretty good in the batting and bowling departments although we have really missed Greg Norton,” he said.

“He has not played all year — he's had problems with the tendons in his shoulder — and we hope he will be back next year which will give us an extra bowler.

“Could we get an overseas player in? We will see what happens with that. We have a really good atmosphere among the lads, the team spirit is fantastic. We are all friends off the pitch as much as on it and we want to build a nice, sustainable club that will keep these lads here for five or ten years.”
