Titans make two wins top of Christmas wish list

ROTHERHAM Titans’ chances of a happy Christmas hinge on what happens in two important games between now and then.

After five straight defeats, a home date against bottom of the table Canterbury on Saturday offers the best possible chance to get a rare win and to start eating into the 12 point gap to the National One safety line.

Saturday is the first of a run of matches against teams Titans are attempting to reel in. They round off the year with a trip over the Pennines to take on Sale FC next week before launching into 2020 with tests against Plymouth, Cambridge and Moseley, who are all in the bottom half of the table.

Joint head coach Matt Smith said: “We have a big six games now — two before Christmas and four in January. If we can get two results going into Christmas it would bring a good feeling around the club.

“If we come out the other side of this run in a good position then the great escape could be on but if these games don’t go our way then the writing will be on the wall unfortunately.”

Although Canterbury have found the step up from National Two South hard after promotion last term, they finally put their first win on the board last week.

They beat Cinderford — recent conquerors of Rotherham — to move within three points of second bottom Hull Ionians.

On the injury front, centre Jamie Cooke had stitches in his mouth in last weekend’s defeat at Old Elthamians and should be OK.

Harry Newborn is pushing for a return to add a much needed option in the front row while back row Lewis Wilson, who missed out last week due to a tight groin, could also be back.

Kick-off is 2pm..
