Thousands at Magna for disabled fair: PICTURE GALLERY

SUMO wrestlers, football stars, magicians, musicians and circus performers were all on hand to put on a spectacular show this week at an event with a difference.

Thousands of visitors flocked to Magna for the second Fairs Fayre event, which combined dozens of stalls providing information about services for the disabled with activities to keep kids of all ages entertained.

Youngsters had the chance to have a go at sumo wrestling and master the climbing wall.

Many of them also got to meet their heroes from Rotherham United, as well as Dr Who impersonator Richard Ashton and his Daleks.

Fairs Fayre was dreamed up as a free fun event for people to learn about disability services after council bosses decided it must not be "just a council event with tables and leaflets."

In the run-up to this year's event Rotherham United footballers edged out Rotherham Ladies players in a closely-fought table football contest.

Event organiser Tom Sweetman said that the number attending had smashed last year's total of more than 4,000, adding: "It's been unbelievable. The great weather has helped but we have had so many people coming to see all the stalls and find out about disability services.

"It's definitely making itself an annual event. We might have to find somewhere bigger next year."
