That win was crucial for us, says proud Rotherham United boss

His team recovered from back-to-back defeats to Leeds and Hull to overcome the Lions 1-0 in a tense, closely fought Championship encounter.

It was a test of character and resolve after Sean Raggett’s 20th minute opener and  Warne admired the way his players battled hard to see the match through.

“It would have been more enjoyable for me if we’d scored a second goal but I was really proud of the team,” he said. “We’ve had pockets of games this year where we have performed well but there has been an error that has killed us a bit. Today the lads did exactly what we asked for most of the game. They ran and chased and tackled and headed it and did everything they could to get us a win. That makes me very proud.

Millwall have strengthened again this window and they’ll have a good season, so for us to get a win against them and not to lose two on the spin at home is crucial."

Warne praised all his players, not least Raggett for heading the winner and Semi Ajayi for another strong showing in an unfamiliar midfield role in the week that he received an international call-up for Nigeria.

“He could play anywhere for me,” said Warne. “ He could play up front, on the wing or full-back. I know you might think I’m a bit crazy but I could do with signing a few more Semi Ajayis. He is everywhere for me at the moment.”

After receiving criticism for only playing with one striker in the midweek defeat to Hull, the manager stuck to his guns and did the same against the Lions. It was a decision that paid off.

“I speak to the staff, we watch the opposition and work out a plan that’s best for us to win,” he said. “Even if we’d lost 2-1, I still would have thought we set up best for the game today.

“We picked the team for the right reasons and fortunately we had a bit of Lady Luck and got through it.”

The win was Rotherham’s second in five games on their return to the Championship and moves them 15th in the table ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup trip to Premier League Everton.
