ROTHERHAM United hope to start building their new stadium as early as August if the planning process goes to schedule.

With the Guest and Chrimes site on Don Street having been secured, the project has cleared its first hurdle and chairman Tony Stewart and his partners will now press on with drawing up drawings to submit to Rotherham Borough Council for planning permission.

Speaking to the Advertiser last night, Stewart said: "In the next three months we will be looking at achieving outline planning permission.

"By August, we want to have full planning permission and we hope to start work on the site by then, if not sooner.

"There will be models and layouts of the stadium drawn up in the next couple of weeks which will be made public."

Steering away from the straight-out-of-the-box style of many new football grounds, Stewart promised a stylish design that would strive to form an attractive addition to the Rotherham sky line.

He said: "We have an opportunity to make something that will be iconic and tick all the boxes."
