The 30-year-old , who has four caps for the Principality, joins the League One Millers after spending the last three seasons with Wigan Athletic.

Swansea-born MacDonald had a brief spell as a teammate of Rotherham manager Paul Warne at Yeovil Town in 2009.

He becomes the second arrival of the summer, with Norwich City striker Carlton Morris having already agreed a season-long loan.

The midfield man moved to the DW Stadium from AFC Bournemouth and made 43 appearances for the Latics, including one last season at AESSEAL New York Stadium when Warne's side won 3-1 in the Carabao Cup.

After suffering a broken leg in 2017, he was hit by another leg injury as he closed in on a return in January 2018 but has been fit since recovering from that.

He began his career with Swansea City and moved in 2011 to Bournemouth, for whom he played more than 100 times, after several loan spells with Yeovil.

The Millers were in need of reinforcement in the centre of the park after releasing Darren Potter and deciding not to pursue a full deal for former loanee Richie Towell who has been snapped up by League Two Salford City.

MacDonald was a scorer at New York in Bournemouth's 5-1 FA Cup win in January 2015 when Steve Evans was in the Rotherham hot-seat.

The player has hit 18 goals in a career spanning nearly 250 games and last played for his country in 2016.
