Proud Willett clinches comeback win in Dubai

The Rotherham Golf Club pro won the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai to complete a massive turn-around after all his problems with injury and form.

Willett, who fell from his Augusta high to a world ranking of 462nd earlier this season, carded a four-under final round of 68 to finish on 18 under par, ahead of fellow Englishman Matt Wallace and Patrick Reed of the United States.

"It's been tough these past two years and I'm massively proud of myself," said Willett.

"You never quite know when a win is around the corner. With everything that's happened you're never sure if another win is going to come.

"It's been a hell of a lot of work, it's just nice to be back."

Willett (31) overcome a final-day wobble to get over the line, nearly hitting his tee shot into a stream on the 18th hole before recovering to make par.

He'd shared the lead with Reed going into the final round and went three shots clear with an eagle on the par-five second and then made birdie on the seventh.

Willett lost the lead after bogeying the 10th and 12th but birdied three more holes before holding his nerve on the final hole.

"Regardless of what would have happened, I’m in a much better place than where I was,” added Willett.

"I knew that things were going the right way and I was doing all the work possible to give myself chances to success.

“Winning’s a rarity on Tour, really. I’m pleased to have won the tournaments that I’ve won over the last few years. I’ve won some pretty big ones and obviously Augusta is always going to be special.

“But this, coming back after everything that’s happened, is going to go down in the history books for myself as one of the most pleasing.”
