Points loss for Appleyard in Commonwealth eliminator

BOXER Lee Appleyard fell short in his quest for a Commonwealth Title despite a brave performance against Rochdale’s unbeaten Bilal Rehman.

The Bramley fighter lost a points decision at the Doncaster Dome after an entertaining and fast-paced ten-rounder.

Appleyard never stopped going forward, connecting with a few good right hands, and had enough in the tank to step up his workrate in the latter stages.

But his rangy opponent, standing 6ft 1in tall, proved hard to pin down due to his movement and he boxed a controlled fight at distance.

He now moves to 12 and 0, winning the Central Area super lightweight title and putting himself in line for a shot at the vacant Commonwealth belt, while Lee will consider his next move after what was his fifth pro defeat.
